Exit Zero Jazz Festival

Excerpt From Exit Zero Jazz Festival’s Website:

The Story

Saxophonist-guitarist Jon Thompson has been a familiar figure on the Philadelphia music scene for the past ten years. A soulful tenor player with a deep tone and expressive phrasing, the Ocean City, New Jersey resident is steeped in jazz while pushing the envelope from the tradition. A seasoned player, Thompson has shared the stage with such jazz luminaries as trumpeter Terell Stafford and saxophonists Richie Cole and Grover Washington. In his Exit Zero Jazz Festival debut, Thompson leads a group featuring Scott Hornick on upright bass and Joe Falcey on drums. In addition to performing, Thompson also teaches at the Lawrenceville School, the Chapin School and the Pennington School.

The Sound

Though he loves traditional jazz, you may hear him do an instrumental version of a Beatles tune, a composition by Ginger Baker or a jazz cover of the rock band Ween. Expect Thompson and his cohorts to also break out robust covers of Pink Floyd’s “Us And Them” and “Money, tunes the saxophonist regularly plays with the Floyd tribute band, The Machine. He may also experiment with various effects and loop pedals, creating atmospheric backdrops for his bold tenor sax improvisations.
